Recipient of four awards from the Dog Writers' Association of America (DWAA); Co-author of four books, including “Dog Training for Dummies”, “The Holistic Guide for a Healthy Dog” and the “Canine Good Citizen: Every Dog Can be One”, named Best Care & Training Book for 1994 by the DWAA; Co-producer of four training videos; Author of over 100 articles for various dog publications, including the AKC Gazette.
Developed the most widely used method for evaluating and selecting puppies for the right home and the right purpose, and her film Puppy Aptitude Testing was named best film for 1980 by the DWAA; Devised a Personality Profile for dogs to help owners gain a better understanding of why pets do what they do, and her article on Drives: A New Look at an Old Concept" was named Best Article in a Specialty Magazine for 1991 by the DWAA.
Specializes in behavior, nutrition and complementary sources of health care such as acupuncture and homeopathy;
Formulated a balanced, home-made diet for dogs in 1984 and founded her own company “Volhard Dog Nutrition” in 2010.
Honorary member of the United Kingdom Registry of Canine Behaviorists.
Her talents are best summed up by James Dearinger, former Director of Obedience for the American Kennel Club, in his Foreword to the Canine Good Citizen (Howell Book House, 1994, 2nd edition 1997): “Wendy has few equals when it comes to understanding canine behavior. She has a remarkable ability to sense the needs of a particular dog and what is best for the animal. A talent, for sure, but one she has honed to a fine point by studious research into all phases of dogs -- behavior, health, nutrition, structure and training.”
She is a respected consultant to breeders, veterinarians and dog owners, and gives seminars on health and behavior. She has lectured at annual conventions of the Pet Care Services Association, APDT, Groom Expo, the United Kingdom Registry of Behavior Consultants and the International Association of Canine Professionals (IACP) and and was inducted into the IACP Hall of Fame in 2006.
Wendy is a true practitioner – she has obtained over 50 conformation, obedience and performance titles with her Landseer Newfoundlands, Yorkshire Terrier, Standard Wirehaired Dachshunds, Labrador Retriever and German Shepherd Dog. She shares her home with her husband, Jack, three Labrador Retrievers, two Standard Wirehaired Dachshunds and two rescue cats.
Sheila is a lifelong owner of dogs and other companion animals (cats, horses, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, etc.). Having graduated from Guy's Hospital in London as a registered nurse, she spent six years working in the pharmaceutical industry, followed by twenty one years of professional medical counseling in conjunction with raising a family and operating her own dog obedience training school, as well as counselling those with pet behaviour problems.
She breeds English Working Springer Spaniels, has also shown in breed for the past twenty years, (Beagles, Hamilton Stovares and Flat Coated Retrievers) and competed in agility and field trials. She currently owns two working English Springer Spaniels, a Flat Coated Retriever a GSD and a cat who loves terrorising the dogs.
Sheila has also studied human psychology through the Open University and has completed both a post graduate Diploma in Advanced Studies course, and an MSc. in Companion Animal Behaviour Counseling at The University of Southampton.
Though mainly working with dogs, she is also qualified to help owners with a variety of companion animals favouring a holistic approach to solving problem behaviour. Her knowledge, combined with many years of counseling experience, helps owners reach an acceptable and hopefully successful solution. She has written a series of articles for "Off Lead" (US) and a number of British journals, and lectures both at home and abroad on a variety of topics.
In 2005 Sheila became one of the first Accredited Clinical Animal Behaviourists in the UK, is the Chairman of the Board of the UK Registry of Canine Behaviourists and a visiting clinician at The University of Southampton Animal Behaviour Clinic. She is married, has two children, and lives with her husband, Graham, in Winkfield, Berkshire.
Dr. Froeling was graduated with honors from Iowa State University in 1988. She has worked as a veterinarian for 15 years in the Northern Virginia area. Currently, she owns and operates Full Circle Equine Service in Amissville, VA.
In 1997, Dr. Froeling completed the Basic Course in Animal Chiropractic and in 2002 completed the Advanced Chiropractic course. She is a lifetime member of the American Veterinary Chiropractic Association (AVCA).
In 2003 she completed the Equine Acupuncture course at the Chi Institute for Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine. She has also taken courses on canine and equine classical acupuncture points and Tui-na, which means push-pull and is the Chinese form of chiropractic and massage.
Dr. Froeling was appointed to the Virginia Board of Veterinary Medicine in 2004. She was also the chair of the Ad Hoc Committee on Equine Dentistry. She retired from both posts as of 2008. In addition to her work in equine medicine she also provides small animal services at Piedmont Pets in Warrenton, VA.
Outside her practice she enjoys organic gardening, marathon running and drumming. Dr Froeling has 5 cats: Artemis, Ferdinand, Rajah, Odin, Tyr and Loki; three labs: , Isis, Sybil, and Dion; and 7 horses: Huck, Beanie, Lyric, Kiwi, Cagney, Trusty and Brego.

Jana Froeling, DVM, AVCA
